Experts in CMT brings together clear, reliable information about Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) in one place. What began as a personal effort to gather the answers that were hard to find has grown into a resource for anyone seeking straightforward explanations, evidence-based insights, and a way to understand medicine’s most complex inheritable disease.

Here, you will find content that covers the full landscape of CMT: research developments, daily life considerations, clinical context, and practical knowledge for navigating life with this disease. The goal is simple. Make CMT easier to understand so people can make informed decisions and feel less alone in the process.

CMT, named for physicians Jean Martin Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth, is an inheritable neuromuscular disease caused by mutations in genes that affect peripheral nerves. CMT affects about 1 in 2500 people. Scientists have identified more than 140 genes with confirmed mutations that cause CMT, along with several chromosomal regions under investigation. These discoveries define more than 170 individual subtypes, and the list continues to grow.

The Experts in CMT platform includes several core sections that make it easier to explore this landscape:

  • What Is CMT?
A clear overview of how CMT works, how it is diagnosed, and what management typically involves.
  • CMT Subtypes Basics
A guide to the major classification groups and how they relate to the underlying science.
  • CMT Glossary
Definitions for common words and phrases to help make CMT less confusing.
  • The Dorsal Root (the blog)
Commentary, deep dives, and context for CMT research and lived experience.
  • The CMT Genes Database
A publicly searchable catalog of all currently known CMT-associated genes and their related subtypes.

Across the platform, the focus is on clarity, accuracy, and making information accessible to anyone who needs it.

When Medicine Lost Its Compass

Evidence failed not because it was wrong, but because it was weaponized. I lived the downstream effects of that failure for more than a decade. This is what happens when medicine forgets that data always ends in a human being.

Error 404: Gene Not Found

CMT genetic testing often fails to identify the cause of the disease, even when comprehensive panels are used. Here, we discuss why this happens, what genetic tests can and cannot do, and why a negative result still matters.

CMT-SORD is a newly discovered CMT subtype driven by toxic sorbitol accumulation. This article explains how "SORD" works, why this subtype is different, and how it led to the fastest-moving therapeutic program in CMT history.
