Patella alta (puh-TEL-uh AL-tuh) is a kneecap that sits abnormally high in relation to the thigh bone. Because it rides high, the kneecap engages the groove of the thigh bone later than normal, which lowers its stability and is linked to kneecap tracking problems and pain. It can be present from birth or develop after injury to the patellar tendon.
