A heterozygote (het-er-oh-ZY-goat) is an individual who has two different versions (alleles) of a particular gene, one inherited from each parent. This is the noun form of heterozygous: where heterozygous describes the state of having two different copies, a heterozygote is the person in that state. In CMT, a person with a dominant subtype is a heterozygote, carrying one normal copy of the gene and one copy with the mutation.
