The peroneal muscles (pair-oh-NEE-ul), also called the fibularis muscles, are a group on the outer side of the lower leg. Running from the fibula down to the bones of the foot, they turn the sole outward and help steady the foot and ankle on uneven ground. In CMT, weakness in these muscles contributes to the ankle instability and foot problems that are common in the disease.
