A proband (PROH-band) is the family member through whom a family’s genetic disease first comes to attention, usually the first person diagnosed. Mapping a family around the proband lets clinicians trace how a disease is passing through the generations. In CMT, the proband might be the first relative to receive a diagnosis, even though the disease may have been present in the family for generations.
