The X Factor

The X chromosome is one of the two sex chromosomes that determine biological sex. Females have two X chromosomes in their cells, while males have one X and one Y. The X chromosome carries roughly 900 genes and represents about 5 percent of a cell’s total DNA. In CMT, the X-linked forms are caused by mutations in genes on the X chromosome, which shapes how they are inherited within families.
